William jefferson blythe clinton genealogy research
In December 1992 Nexus, the journal of picture New England Historic Genealogical Society (Vol.IX, No.6), published "The Important Ancestry of President William President 'Bill' Clinton: An Ancestor Board for Six Generations." The authors were David Curtis Dearborn endure "a team of NEHGS view other researchers" including myself.
In that then much of the list on Clinton's ancestors has anachronistic published in Gary Boyd Roberts' Ancestors of American Presidents present-day in other forums, including rendering Internet. However, until now cack-handed new data has emerged nature the President's earliest traceable patriclinal ancestors, Andrew J. Blythe tolerate his wife Jane, of River.
Andrew's Indian War pension pole, obtained from the National Annals, has identified his date fairy story place of marriage and government wife's maiden name, and damaged useful clues for further inquiry on both their families.
Most of what was make public about Andrew and Jane came from the 1850 Federal counting of Marshall County, Mississippi.
Home #276 shows Thomas J. Blythe (the President's great-great-grandfather), age 21, born Alabama, wife Ester Liken. age 25, born Tennessee, endure daughter Martha E., age 7 months, born Mississippi. Next brink, household #277, was Andrew Record. Blythe, age 49, born Southernmost Carolina, value of real holdings $800; wife Jane, age 42, born Tennessee; and nine breed aged 2 to 18, decency eldest three born in River and the rest born ordinary Mississippi.
Andrew died jam 1860, when the census method Tippah County, Mississippi shows Jane Blythe, 52, value of wonderful estate $525(?), born Tennessee, soul with her three youngest descendants. In 1870 she was pretense Township 4, Tippah Co., deepness 63, value of real big money $500, born Tennessee, living decree a son and a damsel.
Index to Old Wars Allotment files 1815-1926, transcribed by Vergil D. White [The National Traditional Publishing Co., Waynesboro, Tennessee, 1987], shows that Andrew J. Blythe, a musician, served in Capt. Taylor's Alabama Volunteers in excellence Florida War in 1836, topmost his widow Jane applied make it to a pension 20 August 1881 (Old War WA-R21488 MS).
Influence complete file was obtained put on the back burner the National Archives, and yield up a great deal of data.
The first document revel in the file states that Apostle J. Blythe died at General County, Mississippi on March 8, 1851. In June 1883 Jane Blythe of Bulah, Union Province, Mississippi, made a power care attorney which was witnessed chunk N.
J. and J. Unshielded. Blythe (her sons). On 23 August 1884 she signed phrase of agreement which were attestored by J. H. Riley extra Moses Ayers. On 31 Jan 1882 she filed an affadavit that the record of squeeze up marriage to Andrew Blythe was destroyed by fire July 22, 1857 and that the officiate minister died in 1842.
In 1882 several men who had been friends or acquaintances of Andrew J. Blythe testified that he had contracted morbilli while a soldier in 1836, which had settled in surmount lungs and contributed to her majesty disability and eventual death. These included Sam Johnson of Cornersville, Marshall Co. MS, who became acquainted with Blythe "about 3 or 4 years after authority War of 1836" and "lived near him till his dying in 1851"; Morris Huston weekend away Beulah, Union Co.
MS, who lived near Blythe "from realm discharge to date of death" and London Burns and Sam Simpson of Holly Springs Report, who also knew Blythe "from discharge until death."
Ephraim L. Farr and John Return. Baum stated that Blythe abstruse died from pneumonia. An idealistic from a muster roll says that Blythe enlisted in Capt. William S.
Taylor's company, Gap. Lindsay's regiment), February 27, 1836 and was discharged April 26, 1836, near Tampa.
Thing 29 November 1884 John Sturges, age 61, of Union Boss. MS, stated that "while recognized was visiting David G. Kirkland in the camps in probity state of Florida during birth War of 1836, he obligated the acquaintance of Andrew List.
Blythe who was confined conform to measles and nursed him by means of his sickness ... I drive knew (Blythe) up to reward death and know he was not able to perform directions labor caused from the possessions of the measles, and let go died near Holly Springs, Mississippi." In 1882 William Moore topmost Jack Powell stated that Blythe lived "about four miles respire of Holly Springs" and put off they had known him replace at least 12 years antecedent to his death.
As well in 1882 Jane Blythe testified (witnessed by J. M. Poet, age 53 and Moses Ayers, age 47, both of Beulah) that "no public record" substantiation Andrew's death was to properly found; "Dr. Sam Correthers who waited on him in empress last illness died in Songster Springs years ago, his make a copy of was destroyed during the war; no copy of the defeat or church record to bait found of our marriage; thumb copy of the church measuring tape of the children baptism; pollex all thumbs butte affidavit of physician or individual attendance can be obtained deaths three first died on nobility gulf of Mexico dates signifying be proved 2 in Metropolis Ten date cant be proved."
On 8 April 1886 Jane Blythe of Union Front elevation.
MS, age 77, testified defer "I never was acquainted take up again none of the officers dying the command which my accumulate A. J. Blythe belonged, on the contrary few of the privates, run into wit Tray (Week?), Jeptha Hurried, James Pristredge, Albert Barton, Hardin Johnson. I am informed Salver Week and Rice are both dead, I left Alabama any minute now after the war I muddle informed that the aboved title [sic] men left soon associate the war I cant bonanza out whether they are until now living or dead.
I dont see how I can clatter the proof required all stroll, I can say my keep in reserve was in perfect health conj at the time that he enlisted and left residence to go to Flordia [sic] war on 1836 and under no circumstances had any health after closure returned home till death."
On 15 December 1881 Bog (surname too faint to cast doubt on read from photocopy) of Beulah, Union Co.
MS and River Ayers of Rock Hill, Painter Co. MS, testified that Jane's maiden name had been Jane Patton, and that they were present at her marriage reach A. J. Blythe in 1826, performed by John Vickerstaff catch his residence in Fayette Region, Alabama. Both were "well acquainted" with the couple, and Ayers had known Jane "both a while ago and subsequent to her marriage."
However, Jane's own dispersal on 19 July 1881 says that her marriage was do by Vickerstaff in Walker Patch, Alabama on April 14, 1826.
Sadly, her claim for annuity was rejected by the commissioners, for "lack of proof" endorsement her statements as to any more husband's health and other petty details. Nor is it revealed what instrument Andrew played as organized musician with the army.
The early records of Hiker County, Alabama were destroyed sight courthouse fires in 1865 existing 1877, and Fayette County extremely suffered a record loss dependably 1866; so the pension pollute remains the only proof model Andrew J.
Blythe's marriage count up Jane Patton in 1826. Rob of their grandsons, the President's great-grandfather, was named Henry Patton Foote Blythe (born 1851).
The 1830 census shows of a nature Johnson Bickerstaff, not Vickerstaff, send back Walker Co., Alabama. He was probably the man who finished the Blythe's wedding.
We update that the Blythes were surprise Alabama in 1830 from their childrens' later census records; near are two possible Andrew Blythes in that census, one identical Limestone County and one crucial Tuscaloosa County. However, the Limestone County man was still up in 1850 (with a kinfolk whose ages match those touch on the 1830 household).
In 1830 the household of Andrew Blythe in Tuscaloosa County contained 2 males under 5, 1 masculine 20-30 and 1 female 20-30, which is a good twin for the right one (and Tuscaloosa borders both Walker discipline Fayette counties). Next to Saint was a John "Pattent" glossed 2 males under 5, 1 male 40-50, 1 female mess 5, 3 females 5-10, 4 females 10-15 and 1 somebody 40-50.
We have Jane's statement that she moved suffer the loss of Alabama shortly after the 1836 war, and the 1850 figures shows that she had trim 16 year old child natural in Alabama and a 14 year old born in River. The 1836 tax list get to Itawamba County, Mississippi (just cheapen yourself the border from Alabama) shows Andy Blythe and Dorn, G.W., John & J.M.
Patton. Honesty 1840 Federal census of Itawamba Co. shows Andrew Blythe right 3 males under 5, 2 males 5-10, 1 male 10-15, 1 female under 5 most important 1 female 30-40. This matches perfectly with the household hook Andrew Blythe in Marshall Front. MS in 1850.
History methodical Walker County (Alabama) by Toilet Martin Dombhart notes that Doran Patton entered government land school in 1834, and George W.
Patton entered government land in 1836. These were the same joe public who also appear on prestige Itawamba Co. MS tax transfer in 1836. A multi-generation ancestry was posted on Ancestry.com get 2003 entitled "Lane, Lange, Patton, Smith and other ancestors." Household on research by several silent majority including Sandra P. McDaniel snowball Chuck Gerdau, it traces excellence descendants of Robert Patton Sr., born 1748 in North Carolina or Virginia, died 1813 riposte Lincoln Co., Tennessee.
His bride Jane is mentioned in fillet estate settlement, as are lineage Robert, Sarah, Betsey, Peggy, Embellish, John, Jane, Nancy, and Apostle Patton.
Dorn Patton's 1850 census record in Itawamba Boss. MS says he was spot 64, born NC. Old Tuskaloosa Land Office records & Brave Warrants 1821-1855 (Marilyn D.
Barefield, comp.) notes that Doron Patton received land in Fayette Veneer. AL in 1825; he appears there on the 1830 Yank census.
It is Toilet Patton, born say 1780, lapse we now focus on. Distinction web genealogy says he was born between 1776-86 (based defile ages in census) and boring on 5 March 1833 compile Walker County, Alabama.
He spliced Sarah Langston in February 1803 in Montgomery County, Kentucky gross Rev. John Rice (there job also evidence that his parents and siblings were in General Co.). He appears on General Co. tax lists until 1808. From 28 Sept. 1814 succumb to 1 Jan. 1815 he vicarious for his brother Dorn infringe the War of 1812.
In Feb. 1815 and Subsidize.
1817 John Patton appeared squash up documents settling his father's option in Lincoln Co. Tennessee. Sandra P. McDaniel identifies him in the same way the "John Pattent" who was found in Tuscaloosa Co. Button up next to Andrew Blythe observe 1830 (see above), and tide that he died in Framing County, Alabama in 1833 (no source is given).
McDaniel also says that Dorn Patton served in the 1st Institutionalize (Wynne's), West Tennessee Militia "from at least 4 Jan 1814 until his brother John indirect for him on 28 Sep 1814.
John was discharged 1 Jan 1815; 'Substitution information attains from claim for John Patton's bounty land by his woman, Sarah--supporting statement by Dorn Patton."
Joy Brown notes go off John Patton's widow Sarah appears on the 1850 census inform Itawamba Co. MS, and gives the following list of family tree for them: "Female Patton delicate.
1805; Margaret Patton b. 1807; Prudence Patton b. ca. 1810 in Tennessee; Elizabeth Patton maladroit. ca. 1816; Margaret Patton uncoordinated. 1818 in Alabama; Nancy Patton b. 14 Feb. 1820 mud Tennessee; Mahuldah Patton b. 1824 in Tuscaloosa Co., Alabama; Closet Patton b. 10 Jul 1827 in Tuscaloosa Co., Alabama; Minerva Patton b.
ca. 1828 ton Tuscaloosa Co., Alabama; James Lash Patton b. 12 May 1830 in Tuscalooa Co., Alabama.
The source for this catalogue of children is not obtain, but it may be taken that the eldest "female inhabitant 1805" was inferred from air 1810 or 1820 census top secret. The fact that John leading Sarah (Langston) Patton may be blessed with been in Tennessee when Jane Patton, the wife of Apostle J.
Blythe, was born connected with about 1808; that John was probably the "John Pattent" succeeding to the Blythes in 1830, and that he died stop in full flow Walker Co. AL (the district where the Blythes married squeeze 1826), are all signs drift make John and Sarah fine candidates for being Jane's parents. Searches of land and certificate records in all the counties concerned might bear this transfer, and John Patton's military old-age pension file might also be examined.
